- Empi uchi
An elbow strike. Tori uses the elbow to strike an opponent at close range, typically to the head, face, or midsection.
- Gyaku tsuki
Tori punches with the rear hand while rotating the hips, generating power through hip rotation rather than forward stepping. The punching fist and front foot are on opposite sides: for example, the right fist strikes with the left foot forward.

- Shuto uchi
A knife hand strike. Tori uses the outer edge of the hand to strike an opponent, typically to the neck or side of the head.
- Uraken uchi
